Recycling
At MACS, we don’t actually smelt or recycle, we sort and process then ship to large recycling facilities. We’re the link between individuals or smaller businesses and the mills. As a consumer of goods, you are the very first step in recycling, without you bringing your aluminum cans, appliances, or automotive parts to us it ends up in the landfill where it won’t break down and it won’t be reused unless the landfill sorts it out for recycling. Some do and some don’t.
Why Recycle?
Today, I want to talk to you about why you should recycle your scrap metal. This information isn’t for those of you who already recycle because you know it’s important for us to reuse our resources and keep recyclable items out of landfills. You folks are already doing it and should give yourselves a round of applause. This information is for those of you who take your metal items to the landfill/dump, and I’m not going to preach about the environment to you because I know that’s already being done. I’m going to speak to you about the practical and immediate benefits to you.
Did you know that when you pay the landfill to take your unwanted scrap metal, they don’t just bury it with all the other stuff? They pile it up and they have a contract with a scrap yard/recycling facility to buy these items from them. So, if you’re in Calhoun County, Alabama and you take your old washer and dryer to the landfill you’re paying them $8 currently to take it and then they turn around and get paid for it again. Why pay them to take it when you can take it to a scrap yard instead and get paid for it? That’s money in your pocket.
Since some of you may be unsure of what exactly scrap yards will and will not accept, here is a list of items commonly dropped off at the landfill that you can get paid for:
